Winter Car Care

Taking Care of Your Car in Frigid Temps

Take care of your tires & wheels

  • Check tire pressure weekly. Driving on underinflated tires causes more wear and tear. Tires lose a pound of pressure with every 10 degree drop in temp!
  • Check tire tread regularly and consider swapping out regular tires for winter tires. They're designed to give you better traction on snow and ice and even cold pavement.
  • Inspect your wheels to make sure there is no snow or ice built up which can cause vibration while driving.

Take care of your fluids

  • Check your oil regularly. When starting your vehicle, let it idle for a couple minutes and then drive very simply until the oil gets heated.
  • Keep your fuel tank at least half full. In the event of an emergency and you need to wait for rescue, it's a good idea to have at least half a tank of fuel.
  • Check your windshield washer fluid and replace with something formulated for cold weather. Winter blends are less likely to freeze.
  • Fill anti-freeze or flush it if it hasn't been changed in 5 years.

Take care of your wiper blades

  • If you park outdoors, leave the wiper blades in the raised position to prevent them from freezing to your windshield and remove snow, ice or frost from the windshield before using your wipers.
  • Invest in winter wiper blades which have been tested to withstand and perform at extremely low temperatures.

Take care of your battery

  • Change your battery every 3 years and check for signs of corrosion.

Take care of yourself

  • Keep a basic winter survival kit in your vehicle: flashlight, batteries, blanket, snacks, water, gloves, boots, first-aid kit.
  • Make sure you always have an ice scraper/snowbrush and jumper cables packed in your vehicle.
  • Drive with extra caution.
